Special Officer and senior advocate Subhasis Chakrawarty on Monday confirmed that the Meghalaya High Court has ordered that the list of vendors eligible for Certificates of Vending (CVs) must be completed before any eviction at Khyndai Lad. He stated he has informed Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah that any eviction of hawkers prior to this would breach court directives.
Chakrawarty emphasized that compiling the list is a top priority and a report on progress must be submitted before the next hearing on August 5. A stakeholder meeting is scheduled for July 16 to ensure collective input and compliance.
Only vendors listed and issued CVs will be allowed to operate, adhering to court-specified hours and conditions that prevent traffic disruption. The High Court had directed that the list—estimated at 349 vendors—be finalized in coordination with the Hawkers’ Association and relevant authorities.
Unlisted vendors will be deemed unauthorized. Chakrawarty is tasked with ensuring peaceful implementation and will submit a detailed report, including inputs from local and police authorities.
