The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre continues to ignore repeated appeals, resolutions, and meetings urging the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya. Despite the Meghalaya Assembly passing a resolution over five years ago in favour of ILP, no progress has been made. ILP, a document required by Indian citizens to enter certain northeastern states, is currently enforced in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has criticised the state government for failing to act strongly, accusing it of neglecting the issue of unchecked influx. HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said the government ignored proposals to send an all-MLA delegation to meet the Union Home Minister.
The Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) also reiterated its demand for ILP and urged protection of the state’s borders and recognition of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule. HANM announced its new leadership and plans to form forest, tourism, and medical cells, with inductions set for July 23 during its 17th anniversary.
