The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has urged the Meghalaya government to carry out detailed scientific studies before moving forward with plans to develop the Wah Umkhrah riverfront as a tourist destination. VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh warned that without thorough research, the project could turn into a costly failure. He described the government’s ambition to transform the riverfront as “overly ambitious” and questioned the project’s feasibility, pointing out unclear details about the specific river stretch to be developed and previous legal challenges related to eviction drives.
Myrboh cautioned against reckless spending driven by unrealistic expectations, emphasizing the need for caution and awareness of legal and practical issues. The VPP recommended comprehensive scientific assessments to ensure the project’s success, insisting development must be based on data, legal clarity, and environmental considerations. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma confirmed that the Rs 39-49 crore riverfront development, including sports complex upgrades, is sanctioned and underway.
