Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman concluded her four-day Meghalaya visit with a stop at Ramakrishna Mission School in Sohra, an institution integral to the state’s educational and socio-political history. She paid respects at the statues of Swami Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda, acknowledging the Mission’s spiritual roots. Sitharaman toured the vocational training centre, where about 100 women participate in a free weaving program aimed at fostering economic independence through traditional crafts. She engaged with trainees and local entrepreneurs, recognizing the Mission’s focus on empowering women.

Highlighting the school’s legacy, she noted its role in shaping leaders like former chief ministers Brington Buhai Lyngdoh and Donkupar Roy, and parliamentarian George Gilbert Swell. During the school’s centenary celebrations, she planted a sapling symbolizing growth and continuity. Sitharaman also met 90-year-old alumna and former teacher Lolin Lyndem, and school president Padma Shri awardee Theilin Phanbuh, appreciating the institution’s educational, healthcare, and social contributions to the region.
