Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Ramakrishna Mission Ashram School in Meghalaya, paying floral tributes and touring the vocational training centre for 100 women. Swami Anuragananda, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Sohra, is eager to learn about the Mission’s history, growth, and challenges, and is interested in meeting women entrepreneurs and its empowerment initiatives. The Minister also asked about the institution’s alumni, praising stalwarts who were influenced by the Mission’s ideals, including former Assembly Speaker Bah Donkupar Roy, politician Bah G.G. Swell, and former CM Bah B.B. Lyngdoh.
The school’s president, Kong Theilin Phanbuh, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2006 for her services to women’s welfare, was one of the dignitaries that greeted Sitharaman. The school had just celebrated 100 years of service in the area at the time of the visit. To commemorate the event, Sitharaman also planted a seedling on campus. The school community and faculty joined the ceremony, as did former teachers and staff, including 90-year-old Kong Lolin Lyndem, an alumnus who was once a teacher.
