Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman lauded the traditional wisdom of the Khasi people, highlighting their five core principles as powerful foundations for modern sustainable development. Speaking at a public gathering, she emphasised that these values—Ka Tip Briew Tip Blei, Kamai ia ka Hok, Ka Tip Kur Tip Kha, Ka Bhalang Ka Imlang, and Mei-Ramew – Ki Ryngkew Ki Basa—offer deep insights into ethics, humanity, community living, social responsibility, and environmental conservation.
She noted that these principles, especially their emphasis on preserving nature for future generations, align closely with global sustainability goals. Sitharaman said these teachings inspired her deeply, even though she initially hesitated to interpret them. Ka Tip Briew Tip Blei encourages policymakers to recognise divinity in humanity, making policies more compassionate. Kamai ia ka Hok advocates ethical business and righteous living. Ka Tip Kur Tip Kha stresses respect for kinship, essential for inclusive growth. Ka Bhalang Ka Imlang calls for shared prosperity and sustainability, while Mei-Ramew represents reverence for nature.
Reflecting on Meghalaya’s natural beauty, she called the state “blessed,” saying its values should guide national and global policymaking to build a fairer, greener world.
