As part of the Smart Cities Mission, Shillong opened its first shopping center, Polo Commercial Complex, which combines modern commercial design with sustainable planning and represents a major step towards Meghalaya’s urban transformation. Along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Minister Snaiwbhalang Dhar, Health Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, and other top officials, Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasized the project’s importance to Shillong’s development. The Polo Commercial Complex has eight commercial office spaces and 109 retail stores spread across 1.26 acres and 1.70 lakh square feet.

Its 15,270-square-foot food court and gaming area are its key draws, and it is anticipated to develop into a center for Shillong’s retail and recreational activities. Five elevators, twelve escalators, emergency exits, parking for 86 automobiles and 50 two-wheelers, a 75-kiloliter sewage treatment plant, contemporary water treatment systems, 110 CCTV cameras, and a comprehensive building management system are all aspects of the mall, which was built to international standards. For environmental sustainability, it also has a rainwater collecting system and rooftop solar panels. Completed in December 2024, the Polo Commercial Complex, which offers top-notch municipal infrastructure and contemporary urban amenities, is a representation of Shillong’s transition to a smart city.
