Shillong’s East Khasi Hills district has implemented a Smart Zonal Parking System, requiring online payment for parking fees and fines. The system, part of the Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas 2025, will be managed by uniformed Dorbar Shnong volunteers in seven key zones, ensuring only authorized personnel collect parking charges. Ronnieson Wahlang, MCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, announced the successful implementation of recommendations in seven zones, involving stakeholders like the Shillong Municipal Board, taxi owners, and commercial drivers. A sensitization program is planned for bus services. The new parking and penalty payment system in Shillong, India, is a digital-first approach, requiring all payments to be made online.

Monitoring will be carried out by zonal task forces, police, and Shillong Municipal Board representatives. Uniformed volunteers will be deployed to ensure transparency and accurate revenue tracking. The regular parking fees are Rs 40 per hour for four-wheelers and Rs 20 per hour for two-wheelers. High-traffic locations including Ward’s Lake, Polo Towers, the educational centers of Laitumkhrah, and the bustling Rynjah markets will all be covered by the new rules. Previously congested roads from careless parking are now being marked off and controlled. The city has restructured major roads like Smart Road, Oxford Hill, Red Cross, and Boucher Road to accommodate legal parking, with Boucher Road now accommodating 220 four-wheelers. Taxis have designated specific parking zones in New Polo and Golf Link.
