AT Mondal, the Power Minister of Meghalaya, expressed hope that the long-stalled Kynshi Hydro Power Project would be revived following years of uncertainty and delay. The government’s newfound opportunity to move forward with the Kynshi Hydro Power Project was highlighted by Mondal, who pointed to local opposition as a turning point. Initially given to M/s Athena Pvt Ltd, the project was delayed after attempts to transition to a hybrid model, which would have added a PSP component to the existing RoR framework.
Due to a discrepancy with the prior Memorandum of Understanding and the lack of enabling measures in the state’s power policy, the cabinet was forced to scrap the hybrid proposal. Mondal confirmed that the original Memorandum of Understanding, which was signed years ago, will remain in effect even though no new one has been signed as of yet. The minister affirmed that the company will be the project’s owner, with 1% going to local development and 12% going to the state government, encouraging openness and community involvement. In addition to signing the Memorandum of Understanding, Mondal made it clear to the electrical department that they were required to complete the project.
