Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed disappointment over former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh referencing his late father, PA Sangma, in a political debate, calling it “unfortunate” and urging collective efforts to restore peace in Manipur. In response to Biren Singh’s remarks on X (formerly Twitter), Conrad Sangma wrote, “It’s unfortunate that @NBirenSingh ji has dragged the name of (L) Shri P.A. Sangma ji. Sangma ji has always fought for the people of the North East, was a strong advocate for different issues and rights of the people of the North East.”

Biren Singh had earlier questioned Conrad Sangma’s awareness of security measures in Manipur, while also claiming that PA Sangma once advocated for dividing the Northeast along ethnic lines, a stance he called “dangerous.” Shifting the focus from political disagreements, Conrad Sangma emphasized the importance of unity and peacebuilding in Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic tensions for nearly two years. “At this time, everyone’s efforts should be towards the restoration of peace and harmony in Manipur and not indulge in political posturing. We all have to work together,” he stated.

He concluded by urging all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of Manipur’s people, adding that this is what PA Sangma would have wanted. The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between political leaders in the Northeast over ethnic and security issues in Manipur. Biren Singh had defended the state’s border fencing projects, Inner Line Permit system, and crackdowns on illegal immigration, arguing that these measures were essential to protect indigenous communities.
