Meghalaya’s Mawrah village wins National Award for Water Sustainability

Mawrah Village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district has won the Winner Award at the 4th Water Sustainability Award (National Award) 2024-25 for its community-based water management initiative.

The award, organized by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) in partnership with UNDP, the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS), and the Department of Water Resources, was presented at Jacranda Hall, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Mawrah Reservoir Project won in the category “Excellence in Participatory Water Management for Enhancing Water Management through Community Participation.”

The initiative, led by the Soil & Water Conservation Department, Meghalaya, is the first project from the state to receive national recognition for community-driven water resource management.

The award promotes Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, focusing on water conservation and climate-resilient water resource management.

Building on this success, the Meghalaya Government, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has launched a $62.5 million climate-adaptive water harvesting project. The project aims to:

Construct 532 climate-resilient water harvesting structures across Meghalaya.

Improve livelihoods through community-driven water management.

Strengthen institutional capacity and introduce innovative technologies in water conservation.
