The Customized Energy Solutions Foundation (CESF) is set to host a state-level Silk Link workshop in Shillong on February 26, 2025, at Vivanta Meghalaya, aiming to strengthen the Eri silk value chain across the state. With Ri-Bhoi district at the center of Meghalaya’s Eri silk industry, the initiative seeks to expand production beyond the current four districts to tap into the state’s full potential.

CESF Director Ms. Netra Walawalkar highlighted the economic significance of the Eri silk sector, stating, “Expanding production across all districts has the potential to engage a much larger workforce and substantially increase the sector’s economic contribution.” The workshop will bring together key stakeholders, including government agencies, financial institutions, civil society organizations, and private sector players, to identify challenges, develop business models, and improve market access.

Mr. Nitin Akhade, who leads Energy Access and Livelihood projects at CESF, emphasized that the expansion of the Eri silk industry could benefit over 438,000 people. A key focus will be mobilizing ₹100 crore from public and private sectors to integrate decentralized renewable energy (DRE) technologies into silk production. Shillong plays a crucial role in showcasing Meghalaya’s rich handloom heritage. With increasing demand for eco-friendly textiles, the workshop is expected to create new opportunities for artisans, retailers, and exporters in the Shillong market, enhancing sales of high-quality Eri silk products.
