At a ceremony held at the Tura District Auditorium on Monday, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the cornerstone for the Greater Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme.Speaking at the event, Sangma said, “This project was first mentioned in 2004, about 21 years ago, when I was contesting the by-election in Selsella. It was conceived in 2004–2005 with the late P. A. Sangma, who envisioned that it would help tourism, agriculture, and fisheries in addition to addressing the water issues that metropolitan Tura was facing at the time.”
The Rs 398.48 crore initiative, according to the chief minister, is intended to address Tura’s water constraints and guarantee a steady and sustainable supply for the community. “The Tura Urban Water Supply Scheme is anticipated to be finished in roughly 24 to 36 months and is funded by the Government of India through the Special Assistance on Capital Investment,” he stated. In order to guarantee the project’s success, the Chief Minister urged the community to actively participate.
“I implore all parties involved to back the catchment areas’ preservation and protection. The government can start projects and construct reservoirs, but the catchment regions that must be protected are where the water for these dams and reservoirs comes from. Involving locals at every stage of the process would help them create a feeling of accountability and ownership, enabling them to be proud of their contributions to Tura’s growth,” he said.
