Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, has underlined the necessity of targeted research to address the difficulties encountered by areca nut plants, especially in areas such as Meghalaya.Chouhan said, “If there is a need for research on how to save areca nut plants, ICAR should give its full strength and focus. The urgent problem of bud rot disease has had a significant impact on areca nut crops. How areca nuts can endure in this climate is a topic our scientists are researching.”

His comments follow Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s appeal, in which he emphasized the disease’s destructive effects on areca nut crops in the Ri Bhoi and Garo Hills districts. Chouhan’s request that ICAR step up its efforts demonstrates the central government’s dedication to bolstering agricultural resilience and safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods. Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister of Meghalaya, has urged the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Central Government to provide alternative assistance in order to address the state’s farmers’ mounting problems.

Sangma emphasized the necessity for quick action, pointing out the terrible effects of bud rot disease on arecanut plantations, especially in areas like Garo Hills and Ri Bhoi. He added that he was worried about farmers’ ignorance, which made the issue worse. The Chief Minister’s plea emphasizes how urgent it is to address Meghalaya’s agricultural problems, with cooperation being viewed as the best course of action to protect farmers’ livelihoods.
