Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has extended his heartfelt congratulations to George Jacob Koovakad on his elevation to the esteemed position of cardinal by Pope Francis. This historic recognition marks a significant milestone for both the Catholic Church in India and the country’s ecclesiastical presence at the Vatican. Koovakad’s appointment brings the number of Indian cardinals to six, further strengthening India’s representation in the Vatican. At 51, Koovakad is a distinguished diplomat-priest who has earned praise for his dedicated service, particularly his role in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. His leadership in organizing key papal trips to countries such as Canada, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo has earned him international acclaim.

In a tweet, CM Sangma expressed his pride, stating, “Heartfelt congratulations to His Eminence George Jacob Koovakad on being created as Cardinal by the Holy Father, Pope Francis. This significant honour is a testament to his unwavering faith, exemplary service, and dedication to the Church.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Koovakad, describing the event as a “moment of great joy and pride for India,” acknowledging the significance of the appointment for the nation’s Catholic community. Born in Thiruvananthapuram in 1973, Koovakad was ordained in 2004 and has since served in numerous diplomatic missions across the globe, including Algeria, South Korea, Iran, Costa Rica, and Venezuela. His work in the Vatican has focused on facilitating complex papal trips, a responsibility that has deepened his connection with the Holy Father.

A personal highlight in Koovakad’s journey occurred when Pope Francis personally video-called his 95-year-old grandmother when she fell ill, with Koovakad translating from Italian to Malayalam. This gesture revealed the deep personal bond between the Pope and Koovakad, reflecting the profound humanity behind his diplomatic and spiritual duties.
