Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has appealed to the state government to rename the Silchar Railway Station in honor of the eleven language martyrs, or Bhasha Sahids, of Silchar. According to the Jorhat MP, who also serves as the Congress Party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, this action will honor their significant contribution to the 1961 Language Movement in Barak Valley. Gogoi stressed the significance of this renaming exercise in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that it will suitably honor the heroes’ legacy.
The Assam government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, may not have yet to provide a formal petition for this modification, according to a recent answer from the Union Government. The Northeast Frontier Railway’s Principal Chief Commercial Manager, Niraj Sahay, made it very apparent in a letter dated September 3, 2024, that the Union Home Ministry (MHA) must first approve the renaming of the railroad station after the state government makes its recommendation. The senior railway official responded to Gogoi’s request for the renaming of the Silchar Railway Station by informing him of this process. Gogoi has now urged the Assam government to take prompt action by putting out the required proposal and satiating the long-standing desire to pay this appropriate tribute in remembrance of the language martyrs.
