In a shocking discovery, the semi-decomposed body of a prominent leader of ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party Awami League was found in Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district, as per reports on Thursday. The deceased politician has been identified as Ishaque Ali Khan Panna. On August 26, his lifeless body was reportedly discovered in a betel nut orchard about 1.5 kilometers from the border between Bangladesh and India. Panna was a highly recognized figure in the Pirojpur district and had previously held the position of general secretary for the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Since the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina fell on August 5, he had been evading capture. His passport served as proof of identity.
The deceased’s body has been taken to the Khliehriat Civil Hospital for additional testing and scrutiny. According to preliminary findings, Panna most likely had a heart collapse while attempting to cross the border and enter Indian territory covertly. However, since the autopsy reports are still awaiting, the precise cause of his death has not yet been determined. More investigation is underway, and more information about the circumstances of his death is anticipated.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, at least 29 bodies of Awami League leaders and their family members were found across violence-hit Bangladesh after Sheikh Hasina resigned as Prime Minister and fled the country. Following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and exit from the nation, the local daily reported that at least ten people had died in attacks and other acts of violence in Satkhira. Additionally, her party leaders’ and activists’ residences and places of business were robbed and damaged. Parts of the Awami League’s headquarters in the Gulistan neighborhood of Dhaka were repeatedly set on fire. From the blazing building, hundreds of individuals stole furniture, tiles, rods, and other goods.
