Assam has been facing severe flood in the region due to which Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has earlier targeted Meghalaya based University USTM founded by Mahbubul Hoque for the cause. To build the campus many trees were cut off due to which water of Meghalaya flows down towards Assam.

During a press meet, a journalist named Shah Alam questioned on context of the University, he asked, “what about hills being cut in his own constituency.”

Sarma replied, “Why are you equating USTM and Mandakata? Why are you all trying so hard to save USTM?”

“You people, Shah Alam and USTM’s Mahbubul Hoque, the way you all have connected things, will we even survive? I would like to ask Shah Alam if we will even survive in Assam for long?”

The statement from Assam CM Sarma has elicited criticism from many journalist’ bodies in Assam. Guahati Press Club has urged the Chief Minister to not repeat such statement and it’s unacceptable.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed Assam CM for targeting a scribe’s religious identity, through X he expressed by saying, “A sick mind and a loud mouth are a toxic combination.”
