Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Dr. Raj Bhushan Choudhary, highlighted Meghalaya’s distinctive landscapes and rich cultural heritage during a press conference on Friday. Addressing reporters on his third day in the state, Dr. Choudhary underscored the central government’s commitment to ensuring that Meghalaya’s growth is both inclusive and environmentally sustainable. Dr. Choudhary, who had recently returned from South West Khasi Hills, emphasized the importance of balancing development with conservation. “Meghalaya holds a special place in our country due to its unique landscapes and vibrant community. We are dedicated to promoting sustainable growth that aligns with the state’s environmental values,” he said. The Union Minister detailed several central government initiatives aimed at bolstering infrastructure in Meghalaya. Under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan, efforts are underway to enhance road, rail, and air connectivity, and improve digital networks. “These initiatives are designed to open new avenues for trade and ensure that development benefits reach even the remotest areas,” he added.
Dr. Choudhary also addressed the importance of preserving Meghalaya’s natural beauty through initiatives like the National Green Mission and the Climate Resilient Agriculture Programme. “Our goal is to support eco-friendly practices in agriculture, forestry, and other sectors to preserve the state’s rich biodiversity,” he stated. Tourism, a major economic driver for the state, has received attention through the Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD schemes. These programs aim to develop tourism circuits, enhance infrastructure at tourist sites, and promote Meghalaya as a premier eco-tourism destination. “We are working to create sustainable tourism models that benefit local communities and preserve the state’s heritage,” Dr. Choudhary noted. The Union Minister also spoke about efforts to empower youth and women through skill development programs under the Skill India Mission and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana. Special emphasis is placed on entrepreneurship in sectors like handloom, handicrafts, and agro-based industries.
In agriculture, the central government is supporting farmers with financial aid, technological assistance, and infrastructure development. The introduction of organic farming practices and the establishment of cold storage facilities are among the steps being taken to enhance the sector’s sustainability. Dr. Choudhary reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions and promoting decentralization for more inclusive governance. He also highlighted specific schemes such as the Amrit Sarovar Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) aimed at improving rural infrastructure and water management.
