Muslim’s marriage, divorce Kazis registration prohibited in Assam

Assam Government has earlier approved a bill to abolish Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorce Registration Act and Rules of 1935, which permitted underage marriages under specific conditions which will be presented during the Autumn session.

Now again, Assam CM to cut down child marriage has proposed another bill on Muslim marriage and divorce.

Assam CM said, “Now, minor marriage registration will not happen at all. Basically we want to end the menace of child marriage.The marriages will be registered at the Sub-Registrar’s Office.”

Earlier Muslim marriages were registered by the Kazis. Following the new proposed bill, registration by the Kazis will be restricted.
