Shillong: On Monday, Mayralborn Syiem, the UDP MLA from the Nongpoh seat, drew attention to the unchecked growth of YouTubers in the state and requested that a broadcasting code of ethics be put in place by the government to control and lessen the spread of misleading information by a small number of people.
A zero-hour notice was raised in the Assembly by Mayralborn, who cited a recent incident in which the YouTube channel Hynniewtrep TV, run by Fernando Diengdoh of Kynshi village, translated the image of the Chairman of Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shning, BB Makdoh from Nongpoh, and a FIR that was filed in this regard.
BB Makdoh from Nongpoh, the Chairman of Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shning, had his image stolen by Hynniewtrep TV, a YouTube channel run by Fernando Diengdoh from Kynshi village. Mayralborn brought up this incident and filed a formal complaint in the Assembly.
Declaring unequivocally that he is not attempting to disparage or blame anyone, he did express sadness over the fact that certain people in today’s world have gone beyond the bounds of public decency.
He remarked that although Makdoh had previously been a victim, anyone in the House may become a victim of malicious intent tomorrow.

He said that the spread of fake news poses a severe concern. “Those YouTube channels with malafide intentions publish news and information without proper verification driven by a single motive of gaining viewership for monetary gains,” he said.
“To address the issue, the State government should consider implementing a Broadcasting code of ethics,” stated the member from Nongpoh.
He said that such a code would provide the government the authority to control and lessen the spread of misleading information.
Furthermore, he recommended that the government’s programs be covered by individuals accredited by the DIPR rather than by haphazard YouTubers.
He also made the idea that the YouTubers focus more on providing entertainment than journalism.
The Nongpoh lawmaker also emphasized how, in 2021, the central government sent out notifications about information technology guidelines, a digital media ethics code, with the purpose of taking down content and prescribing standards for what digital publishers might post on the internet.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma responded by saying that the individual who wrote and posted the Makdoh news on YouTube was called to the Nongpoh police station and had his testimony recorded.
According to him, social media is a necessary component of everyday life, but despite its numerous advantages, there are still a number of disadvantages that should be considered.
He stated that a cybercrime wing has been established to monitor and look into cybercrimes or crimes linked to them, as a result of government initiatives.
In order to encourage a culture of responsible content production, the Chief Minister politely requested that content creators verify or fact check any material before publishing it.
Additionally, he stated that he had taken note of the recommendations and issues brought up to put in place and introduce a framework for more effectively monitoring information on social media.
