Shillong: Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), LR Bishnoi, stated that the State is particularly vulnerable to the drug problem because of its closeness to Southeast Asia’s notorious “Golden Triangle.”
During a Monday awareness program on drug abuse and its consequences, Bishnoi addressed the St. Anthony’s College students. He mentioned that the State is near the Golden Triangle, which includes parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos, making it more vulnerable to drug abuse because of the easy access to drugs.
He claimed that the state was especially susceptible since the Golden Triangle is a location well-known for the manufacturing and transportation of heroin and opium.
In addition to sharing a lengthy border with Assam, he claims that Meghalaya is sensitive because of its porous border with Bangladesh.
According to Dr. Bishnoi, Meghalaya police have found several more substances in addition to 24 kg of heroine and 15 kg of crystal meth. The substance crystal meth is extremely deadly.
The DGP applauded the ongoing awareness campaigns and stated that, in the allotted 15 days, they had organized 1263 awareness campaigns, setting a national record. Encouraging kids to abstain from all drug use,
Additionally, he emphasized how critical it is to stop the drug problem by involving all relevant parties and every member of society.
He claims that the drug threat affects all 210 nations on Earth, with the exception of Vatican City.
He stated that the statistics indicates the seriousness of the issue, citing 2.5 lakh drug users in Meghalaya.
“The number of drug users is rising at an exponential rate every year.” The DGP expressed worry about the large number of women who had become victims of drug abuse.
The number of drug misuse cases recorded has increased, from 116 in 2020–22 to 183 in 2023. 2022 saw the arrest of 234 alleged drug dealers.
