Baljek Airport from non-interested bidders to operate flights till date

Shiling: The second biggest city in the meghalaya, Baljek Airport, is located in the outskirts of Tura Town. Will be continuedly closed this airport for remain defunct for some more time, since no bidders are interested to operate smaller flights from the Airport.

Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Transport, Sniawbhalang Dhar, said that the Chief Minister has written many letters and the latest reply from the Ministry of Civil Aviation is that no bidder is interested to operate smaller flights. Replying to a query from Ampati MLA, Miani D Shira said. 

Why the Airport could not be made functional until date, to which Dhar replied, that the total area of the Airport is not enough to operate ATR flights. Terming this as unsuitable, Dhara Still said that he is next up on the matter to secure that compact flying handle from the Baljek Airport. Earlier, the Defiance MLA also inquired from the Government. It is noticed that the Government in the year 2013 acquired 50 acres of land, but it was not acceptable properly. According to Dhar, the Airports Authority of India has asked for more land. „We are following up on the matter, but it will take few time, as unescorted by other 60 acre of land we cannot operate ATRs from there“, he said. It is learnt that the land accession activity for another 60 acre of land is on, after which the AAI would be asked to send DPRs for infrastructural progress of the Airport. Nongthymmai MLA Charles Pyngrope also inquired as to how much land is required to make the Airport functional, to which the Minister informed that the present area of the Airport is around 120 acres and it needs another 60 acres. To another supplementary about runway extension, he said that the present length of the runway at the Baljjek Airport is 1100 metres and it needs to be extended up to 1750 metres for ATRs to land.
