A police bus and a police jeep were set ablazed, with stones and petrol bombs were thrown at policemen in Shillong on the evening of Thursday after a candlelight vigil over the violence at the state’s border with Assam brings to an end, a senior police officer told.
Petrol bombs were retched at police vehicles setting them on flames, while a traffic police kiosk was brought down with stones, and petrol bombs were launched at Police at Barik point, barely metres from the place where a candlelight vigil and sit-in protest was held by different organizations including the Khasi Students Union and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People, officials said.
Police said they had to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Those behind this violence were yet to be identified, police said. Shops and business establishments run by non-tribals in Khyndailad, Iewduh and other areas in Shillong were closed in early hours apprehending violence. An Assam forest guard is also died in the violence in the early hours of Tuesday.
