The 7th Elite Men’s National Boxing Championship completed its quarterfinal round at the SAI Indoor Hall here today, with the top names going through to the last four stage.
The Honourable Chief Minister Shri Conrad K Sangma paid a visit to interact with the boxers, watch a few of the exciting early fights and wish the pugilists best as the competition entered in the crunch matches.
The said championship which will conclude on 1st of December, is being organised by Meghalaya Boxing Association in collaboration with the Boxing Federation of India and is sponsored by Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
“It is a very happy and proud moment for us to organize a boxing championship league in Shillong. Our government is giving a very strong effort to support sports in our state by supporting sports associations, developing training facilities and hosting events like this Championship” Shri Sangma said. “Challenges are there because we’re only starting with this. We will improve us along the way and hopefully we will host international events.
The state government has a ambition of seeing a Meghalayan to take part in the Olympics within the next few years. In pursuit of this ambition, it had invested resources into its Elite and Super Elite Pathway Programmes to test children for athletic ability and give those a show promising intensive training.
“It is very important to implement a scientific approach in talent identification and grooming of athletes that can be applied in sports activities and also, we can make sure that our youngsters are given opportunities to perform and shine” the Minister said.
